Update: Sword-Wielding Man Arrested for Menacing Strangers in Bushwick’s Maria Hernandez Park

A Bed-Stuy man who alarmed the public on Monday night by swinging around big weaponry in Maria Hernandez Park was subdued by police and taken into custody for evaluation at a local hospital, police say.

Officers from the 83rd precinct arrived at the scene at approximately 8pm after receiving 911 calls about a belligerent individual wielding multiple swords and menacing strangers within the confines of the park.

There, they tracked down Angel Trujillo, a 46 year old resident of Bedford-Stuyvesant, wielding the weapons in question.

When Trujillo was asked to drop his weapons and didn’t comply, he was tasered by an officer and removed to Woodhull Hospital for evaluation.

In addition to the offending weapons, officers recovered a machete and two smaller knives that had also been in Trujillo’s possession.

No one was injured in the incident, and a spokesperson for the NYPD emphasized that the department was happy that the arrest had gone smoothly and that Mr. Trujillo had been safely taken into custody by members of the New York City police department.

Correction: A previous version of this story misidentified Angel Trujillo as a resident of Bushwick: he is a resident of Bedford-Stuyvesant. Additionally, a spokesperson for the NYPD declined to confirm the two swords were the weapons in the incident and identified the machete and knives as the only weapons recovered in the incident.
