Happy New Year! The end of any year calls for an unprecedented number of round-up lists and superlatives. In New York City, with all of its bars and restaurants, the food and drink related ones are all over.

One writer for The New Yorker, Emma Allen, weighed in on her favorite cocktail of 2016 and it turns out to be right here in our own backyard, Bushwick! It’s none other than The Painkiller available at The Johnson’s, for as little as $4 if you hit their happy hour.

Allen told NPR in a recent interview: “The Painkiller, that’s like the punch line for 2016. The Painkiller, well, the one I wrote about is at this bar in Bushwick that’s called The Johnsons … And they have a slushy machine there, sort of a la 7-Eleven, like a Slurpee cocktail. And they serve it from this machine, The Painkiller, which is a rum-based coconut flavored – it’s got some pineapple in there, some orange. And during the day it costs as little as $4.”

Despite it being a “sort of Band-Aid color … the presentation matters less and less as you go on” Allen says.

There you have it Bushwick! Straight from Emma Allen of The New Yorker, the best cocktail of 2016. Head to The Johnsons and ease the inevitable pain of 2017. Painkillers served at $4 everyday until 9 p.m, then $6 until close at 4 a.m.
