State Senator Julia Salazar will hold a town hall on the New York State budget on Thursday, October 1, from 6 to 8 p.m. at 223 Linden St. in Bushwick, according to the flyer she posted on Instagram on September 27. The event is billed as “State Budget 101,” and the flyer and invitation are in English and Spanish.
In the invitation her office sent out on September 10, Salazar wrote that she will “explain the budget process and answer your questions.” Attendees can RSVP at nysenate.gov/StateBudget101, the link in her Instagram bio, which describes her District 18 as “North & East Brooklyn + Ridgewood, Queens.” Bushwick Daily has covered her district office before, including its Evergreen Avenue cooling center this summer.
The flyer lists three discussion topics: how to get involved; what the budget does, such as funding roads and hospitals and raising or lowering income taxes; and the non-financial policies in the budget, including immigration, criminal justice, climate and housing.
“Want to know why it’s so complicated to tax the rich? Or why some projects in your community get funded, but others don’t?” Salazar wrote in the town hall invitation. “And, did you know our State Budget does more than provide funding and dictate our state taxes? It also includes immigration protections, tenant protections, criminal justice reforms, and more.”
Salazar’s district director, Jessica Franco-Ramos, sent the invitation to Brooklyn Community Board 1 on September 10 and asked the board to share the flyer in its newsletter, and Community Board 4 listed the town hall in its September newsletter. The venue, 223 Linden Street, is the Linden Grove Senior Residences, a 13-story building that city property records list as built in 2023, with the New York City Housing Authority as owner of record and mixed public and private ownership. Community Board 4’s housing committee scheduled an update on the planned NYCHA “Seniors First” building at that address for September 27, 2022, according to the board’s newsletter, and Brooklyn Borough President Antonio Reynoso’s office scheduled a Bushwick 1000 job fair there for May 19, according to an email the office sent to Community Board 1.

Salazar was first elected to the State Senate in 2018 and has focused on tenant rights, affordable housing and the state’s rent regulations.
