Flat iron bitch before intro

The Curly Hair struggle. You know, getting something caught in a curl even though you bought that shampoo that guaranteed to detangle every strand. Or, straightening your hair only to have it rain. Or humidity.

Thankfully, we’ve found a few women who know that struggle all too well. These women know your pain and they know that your hair is your crown and glory; a definitive accessory that tells people who you are, where you come from, your ideals, and even how you’re feeling that day. Liz Owuso of LizLovesHair and Dailey Green of H2Salon are the founders and head stylists at their salons. Both of these BedStuy salons know that the search for someone who a) knows what to do with your hair; and b) loves your hair like you love your hair, can be worse than finding a new apartment. These women believe in healthy, beautiful hair no matter the texture, style or length and, for those of us with more kink than curl, we know how important it is to have a stylist that can color, weave, straighten, or two strand twist some natural hair, and yes, even that kitchen.

Liz Owusu is a good girl. Her hands have sewn hair onto the heads of greats like Whitney Houston, Iman and Missy Elliot. Liz is an Aveda trained hair stylist and is a certified Organic Color Systems colorist, who specializes in hair extensions, transitioning, natural and relaxed hair. Liz has a hot list of celeb clientele including rapper Azealia Banks, actress Teyana Taylor, and Love & Hip Hop star K. Michelle.

LizLovesHair is a hot and trendy salon tucked away in BedStuy on the corner of Decatur St and Howard Ave. The small salon treats guests to a cozy, “big sister does my hair” vibe that can make a newcomer feel comfortable and safe. Liz prides herself in helping her clients achieve their hair goals. Liz loves to “restore the health of [her clients] hair” because for her, proof is in the pudding. While Liz doesn’t provide beverages during services, the salon’s new sister café, Butch & Coco, has you covered for all coffee shop snack needs.

LizLovesHair’s most requested services are their hair installations, custom units and press and trims. “Bringing [your] hair to a better place” is what she focuses on and how her business has thrived in the past few years. Her hot tip for hair care: “Trim you ends! There is a huge difference between growing healthy hair and having long hair with dead ends.”

H2 Salon: “Come get pampered!”

473 Tompkins Ave, BedStuy

H2 front

Do not let the outside fool you. H2 Salon oozes “come get pampered.” With soft jazz playing in the back, the multileveled salon transports you to a peaceful place. Even first time visitors can see how elegant the salon is, from offering guests beverages while they wait for their stylist, access to wifi, and a relaxing backyard patio.

H2 and Dailey

H2 Salon owner Dailey Green is excited about the creative color movement for women with some extra curl. “You can really push the envelope when it comes to coloring natural hair.” A huge shift from the mundane reds, browns, and golds we were used to. H2 even has a natural coloring service that keeps the color looking like “it’s coming out of your head.” Finally, the cure for kool-aid edges.

The salon’s most popular style is the tapered haircut for natural hair. Knowing when to let “the hair stay feminine,” Dailey and her team of stylists have mastered the cut. Dailey’s tip for your hair is to keep it hydrated. “Curly hair always has to be conditioned.” Curly hair needs moisture from “super duper kinky to kind of wavy.”
