Are you the kind of girl who never goes unnoticed? Do you like to wear theatrical statement pieces like spiky corsets or loud jewelry? Or maybe you’re simply looking for original clothing items at affordable price? We have some great news for you! A brand new boutique Jakamo just opened on Noll Street, and their mission is nothing else but to make you look u-n-f-o-r-g-e-t-t-a-b-l-e!

Co-owners and best friends, Katy Freeman and Alison Mantilla both come from a theater background. Katy studied costume and Alison studied set design in upstate New York. “We love those statement pieces – something that you can be wearing at a plain outfit but that will be that wow factor to it,” Katy told us when we visited the store yesterday. “Our clothes have a vintage feel but they’re modern, so that you don’t look outdated,” she further explained. “We love glamour – we use a lot of lace and feathers…”

When Katy and Allison moved to New York City after graduating, they realized that items of clothing similar to the ones that they were able to easily make were really overpriced. “We both come from artist backgrounds and artist paychecks, and we understand that it’s hard to afford nice things. We wanted to offer really beautiful and quality pieces like that at affordable prices,” said Katy.

Katy and Alison live in Washington Heights, Manhattan. The idea to open a store with embellished vintage fashion in Bushwick came after they had been to parties here and realized that Bushwick has a big creative and artistic community with eclectic taste in clothing. “The people around here are so nice and helpful. They organize block parties, art shows and what not….”

The cheapest items at Jakamo are rings and other jewelry pieces for $5. The most expensive items at the moment are the aforementioned spiky corsets for $50-60. Everything else is around $20, and they also have a $5 basket.

Jakamo on Noll Street is a colorful addition to the very few fashion stores in Bushwick, and the prices won’t leave your wallet bleeding!
