DIY venue, Shea Stadium, has had quite the month. After an abrupt closure, the venue launched a Kickstarter campaign which reached its funding goal within hours. Now, the East Williamsburg venue is thrown into limbo yet again.

As of Wednesday, the team behind the venue has announced that their landlords have decided to withhold the signatures necessary to move forward with plans for renovation and bringing the DIY performance space up to code.

The surprise snag in the plans was revealed via Kickstarter update and Facebook post. You can read it in its entirety below:

They had originally asked their fans for $50,000 to help with the costs of becoming a 100-percent legal space. Within one day, the campaign surpassed its goal. When the campaign ended, 1,699 people had pledged nearly double that amount. It would have surely paved the road to a smooth re-opening within the coming months. But the landlords had other plans.

We reached out to Shea Stadium for comment but have not heard back. We’ll update this article when more information becomes available.

Our hopes are that East Williamsburg does not lose another DIY space to the rising tide of inflated rent prices and rampant development, but it seems as if the writing is on the wall.
