The New York City Ballet’s “Contemporary Choreography II” program features the debut of “The Naked King,” the 500th original ballet created for the company, according to the local news outlet Hell Gate, which reviewed the production in its February 6 newsletter.
Hell Gate framed the piece as a first-time balletgoer’s account of attending the company at Lincoln Center, noting that the New York City Ballet does not have a dress code for audience members.
The outlet wrote that the winter season was preceded by a labor dispute that began January 20. According to Hell Gate, that dispute escalated to the point that dancers boycotted the company’s “Fall Gala” in October.
Hell Gate did not detail the terms of the labor dispute or its resolution in the portion of the newsletter available to Bushwick Daily. The outlet said it published the review alongside a new episode of the Hell Gate Podcast.
