Athena opens the room.

A self-taught painter who grew up in Bushwick is opening a gallery this Friday in the only space in the neighborhood she controls outright: her own apartment. Giannelli Vargas is turning hers into Eleveno2 Gallery for a show called Who Are You Behind Closed Doors?, which asks exactly what it sounds like. It goes up during Bushwick Open Studios.

That sets the tone for the week. The rooms worth standing in are small, a lot of them cost nothing, and most are not on any big venue’s calendar. Here is the week, night by night.

WEDNESDAY, SEPTEMBER 16

Bushwick Comedy Club, 259 Melrose Street. The Saturday Night Showcase runs twice, 8 p.m. and 10 p.m. Early show is Breck with Don’t Tellers members Eeland Stribling and James Mwara. Late show is the club’s German resident Emma Dalenberg with Jabari Elzie and Eric Walsh. $15, and it is BYOB.

Baby’s All Right, 146 Broadway. Bermuda Search Party.

THURSDAY, SEPTEMBER 17

The Brick, 579 Metropolitan Avenue. The Wreck of the Unbelievable opens, a new play by Sleth subtitled in which I am Damien Hirst’s secret boyfriend, in which Hirst has died, suddenly and suspiciously, leaving behind hundreds of dead animals in formaldehyde, a diamond-encrusted skull and a secret boyfriend nobody knew about. 8 p.m., 70 minutes, $25 to $50. It runs through September 26, so Thursday is not your only shot. Tickets and dates.

Kato Sake Works, 379 Troutman Street. Live music from pando, 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. One drink minimum, $10 suggested. It is a working sake brewery, and it runs something on those terms most nights, which makes it the cheapest good room in Bushwick.

Baby’s All Right. Balkans.

FRIDAY, SEPTEMBER 18

Eleveno2 Gallery, Bushwick. Giannelli Vargas opens Who Are You Behind Closed Doors? in her apartment at 7 p.m. She is self-taught, and the work runs on identity, healing, resilience, Puerto Rican culture, motherhood and growing up on these blocks. An apartment show lives or dies on who walks through the door, so walk through the door. She has a solo show coming November 7, also in Bushwick.

963 Bushwick Avenue. DIVINE, an exhibition by BOS CHILAFORFUN.

Baby’s All Right. Bea Miller and Me As a Girl, if you want something that ends before sunrise.

SATURDAY, SEPTEMBER 19

The Good Life Garden, 50 Goodwin Place. BK Cumbia Fest returns for its fourth year, 4 p.m. to 10 p.m., free. DJs Monarca Sonido and Vaiina, plus a Rueda de Oro drum and dance circle that walks you through Colombian coast rhythms whether or not you can dance. Food vendors, participatory art. City Parks Foundation and Partnerships for Parks put money behind it, which is why it stays free. Details at brooklyncumbiafestival.com.

P.O. Reinaldo Salgado Playground, beside PS 309 in Bed-Stuy. Spill It Entertainment runs Back to the Block 6: Community Day, noon to 6 p.m., free. Sixth year. Youth and family activities, community resources, giveaways. This year’s theme is The Community We Know.

Wyckoff Avenue at Jefferson Street. A mural goes up at noon honoring people living with multiple myeloma, shaped by real patient stories and carrying a QR code to free resources. Patients and advocates speak. A block party attached to a diagnosis most people cannot define, which is the point of it.

Ornithology Jazz Club rooftop, 6 Suydam Street. Aesop’s Sound Fables turns three and marks it by scoring Salome, the 1923 silent film, live. Mike Nowotarski on guitar, Rosalie Avery on bassoon, Fox Indigo on cello. 75 minutes, 7 p.m., $20 in advance and $25 at the door.

Elsewhere. Laylit hits eight years and 150 parties, 5 p.m. to 4 a.m. across five rooms including the roof, more than 25 artists, and a set from Elyanna at 12:40 a.m.

One logistical warning. Manhattan-bound J and M trains skip Flushing Avenue, Lorimer Street and Hewes Street from 3:45 a.m. Saturday until 10 p.m. Sunday while the MTA does accessibility work at Norwood Avenue. Everything at Myrtle Avenue boards from the Jamaica Center and Metropolitan Avenue-bound platform. Build in twenty minutes.
