KAYE Shares Video For Her New Single “Too Much”

KAYE, the moniker of multi-instrumentalist Charlene Kaye, recently relaunched her solo career with the release of her first new music since 2017. After a several years stint as the lead vocalist of the Brooklyn based chamber-pop collective San Fermin, KAYE announced her departure from the group late last year in order to better focus on her solo-career. After sharing the captivating song “Closer Than This” and a provocative accompanying video, Kaye has now shared another killer single, “Too Much,” and a riveting visual piece to accompany it.

“Too Much” sees Kaye taking her electro-infused pop sound to new heights, fusing elements of dance, indie-pop, and R&B. The song wastes no time getting started, as she immediately introduces a toe-tapping beat and injects her slinky, yet forceful voice in front of a flurry of industrial sounding guitars and pulsating synths. Kaye’s shimmering and soulful vocals are front and center throughout, as she propels the listener down a dense hallway of explosiveness.

The video, which was directed by Kaye’s sister Liann, was inspired by Yoko Ono’s work  “Cut Piece,” a performance where Ono invites audience members to come onstage to cut off a portion of her suit. However, Kaye flips the script for “Too Much,” as she instead sheds pieces of her own suit through a combination of rhythmic dance moves and slowly, but deliberately, ripping them off herself. The concept sees KAYE exploring the idea of reasserting control over life’s changes and how reinvention can seem simultaneously fast and slow.
