Volunteers from Everyone NY worked alongside City Harvest staff on Thursday, April 16, packing fresh produce into family-sized bags at the food rescue organization’s Food Rescue Center in Sunset Park, Brooklyn, according to a media advisory from City Harvest.
The hands-on repack event ran from 10 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at the center at 171 53rd St., the advisory said. The bags were destined for distribution to food pantries across New York City, part of an effort the organization said helps families experiencing food insecurity at a time when demand for food assistance remains high.
City Harvest, which describes itself as New York City’s first and largest food rescue organization, said visits to food pantries and soup kitchens are generally up nearly 89 percent compared with levels before the pandemic, and that demand is not declining. Volunteer groups like Everyone NY play a vital role in helping the organization provide free, nutritious food to children, families and seniors across the five boroughs, City Harvest said.
Everyone NY is a nonprofit dedicated to helping people with developmental challenges achieve fuller and healthier lives through inclusion and support, according to the advisory. The organization said staff and volunteers from both groups, along with Margot Supple, a City Harvest volunteer programs representative, were available for interviews at the event.
