When we first put out a call for nominations for Best of Bushwick 2018: Grocery Store, I wasn’t sure how it was going to go. Groceries are important to everybody’s daily life, of course, but are they exciting enough — sexy enough — to get people motivated to nominate and vote?
Turns out the answer is “yes.” BDers came together and nominated a small but diverse group of grocery spots, with everything from hyper-local hipster coops to regional market chains.
Then you voted. It was a close race but one grocery store pulled ahead of the others in the final days. Earning 44 percent of your votes, Bushwick’s Best Grocery Store 2018 is…
City Fresh Market!
The regional chain, with locations across NYC, Westchester, Connecticut, and New Jersey, was founded in 1997. The Bushwick location, at 229 Knickerbocker Ave., next to Maria Hernandez Park, was opened in 2004.
City Fresh Market is a full-service grocery market that puts an emphasis on fresh produce, as well as ensuring there are organic, gluten free, and vegan options available. They also offer a juice and smoothie bar, a selection of local coffees and beers, and on-tap Kombucha.
“We are blessed to be a part of the great community here in Bushwick and to be welcomed by new faces in the neighborhood every day,” said City Fresh Store Manager Chris Macioch. “We are lucky to have such hardworking and loyal employees, who make our store so desirable to the Bushwick Community.
“We hope to be able to continue to give back to this community that has done so much for us since 2004,” Macioch said.
So there you have it, folks. Though my heart belongs to Food Bazaar, I have been outvoted by a plurality of Bushwick Daily readers, who demanded that City Fresh Market take home Best of Bushwick 2018: Grocery Store.
