Here at Bushwick Daily, we are constantly covering the places and people in the neighborhood. Rarely, however, do we write about our four-legged friends. So, today we ask: Who are the dogs of Bushwick?

According to dog licensing data from the Department of Health, pitbulls are the most popular dogs in the neighborhood. Pitbulls and pitbull mixes made up ten percent of total licenses issued in 2016, the most recent year for which the data is available. After pitbulls, the most popular breeds were mutts or “unknown”, chihuahuas, shih tzus, and yorkshire terriers.

Bushwick also likes to mix it up when it comes to dog names. The most popular dog name in both Manhattan and Brooklyn is Max. But, in Bushwick, Oreo tops the list for most popular name. Most of the dog owners of Bushwick like to blaze their own trail when it comes to naming, though. Around 65 percent of Bushwick dogs that registered or renewed their license in 2016 had one-of-a-kind names. Some of the standouts included Shakira, Vespa, Oolong, Napoleon, and Bagels.

Owners are required to purchase or renew a dog license every one to five years, so the data from a single year doesn’t necessarily tell us about all the dogs in the neighborhood, but it gives us a pretty good idea.

And, what would a post about Bushwick dogs be without a few pictures of our furry friends? See below for some of the cutest Instagram posts of dogs around the neighborhood.
