Best Events This Week in Brooklyn

Socially distanced events happening in and around Brooklyn, August 11 - 17

Andrew Spaulding

night life

Theres plenty to do in Brooklyn this week if you’re open to stretching your legs and staying six feet apart.  We’ve gathered a few here to help you get out of the house and get some vitamin D.  Theres some indoor activities too to help you stretch your brain.

"I Am Not Your Negro" JAmes Baldwin

Nowadays, Tuesday & Wednesday Aug, 11-12 @ Sundown

Another essential film in the outdoor space at Nowaday's.  James Baldwin was one of the most important writers and thinkers of the black power movement in the 60's.  Familiar, if not friendly, with both Malcom X and Martin Luther King, many think of him as the silent member of the trifecta of Black thinkers in that era.  This film is an account of his trials during the civil rights era.  It is a heartbreaking essay about the deaths of King and X.  Essential viewing in the era of Black Lives Matter. you must RSVP to attend.

Also on Wednesday is NYC Summerstage bringing us an open forum with Talking Heads drummer Chris Frantz and Sunflower Bean’s Julia Cumming.  Frantz’ new book “Remain In Love” dishes out some insider info on being a member of Talking Heads and Tom Tom Club.  Theres sure to be some interesting tidbits on David Byrne, the Ramones, and just generally being an NYC rock legend.  Attend on @summerstage instagram live.  Its Free!

Guided Cemetary tour, BY GELSEY BELL

Green Wood Cemetary, Everyday, 7am - 7pm

Artist Gelsey Bell furnishes a guided walk through Green Wood Cemetery called “Cairns” available for purchase on her bandcamp.  The walk begins from Green-Wood’s Sunset Park Entrance at 4th Ave. and 35th St. It takes about an hour.  If graveyards aren’t your cup of tea right now, think of it as a walk through the emptiest sculpture garden in New York City.

Jack Grace, Juice Webster, e4444e

Baby's All Right tv, Friday Aug 14th 9pm, $ Donation

Jack Grace, an inimitable artist. The journey for the singer-songwriter, musician and producer started in the suburbs of Newcastle (NSW) obsessing over piano, making demos and listening to mixes of Silver Chair, Dylan and Ray Charles. The result of which led him to the upper echelons of the Australian indie underground world before relocating to Paris in 2018.  He joins the Baby’s All Right online roster this Friday with folk artist Juice Webster and e4444e.
