Today, Onderdonk and Catalpa Avenues are the site of a high-profile film shoot. Martin Scorcese’s newest production, “The Irishman,” starring the trifecta of Robert De Niro, Al Pacino, and Joe Pesci came to the unassuming Ridgewood intersection with large trucks aplenty.
The film itself is based on the book “I Heard You Paint Houses: Frank ‘The Irishman’ Sheeran and the Inside Story of the Mafia, the Teamsters, and the Final Ride by Jimmy Hoffa” by Charles Brandt, which true to its very long title is about a man named Frank Sheeran who claims to have been the one to assassinate Jimmy Hoffa. The evidence, though, outside of a confession is pretty slim.
With an all-star cast, a still-compelling murder mystery for a plot, and a huge production for Netflix, one can probably already predict that “The Irishman” will make a strong showing at the Oscars after its 2019 release.
We’re excited to see if Ridgewood will play itself or if it will be passing for Detroit, where the assassination allegedly took place.
By the way, this isn’t the first time a Robert De Niro-helmed project has shot in the area. His film “The Comedian” shot in Bushwick last year!
