Friday, March 25

Born in Flames!

What is it?

Come for a screening and discussion of Lizzie Borden’s 1983 movie Born in Flames, in a screening co-hosted by local DSA’s North Brooklyn branch, in a joint event that’s being run by the socialist party’s queer caucus.

Where is it?

Woodbine, 585 Woodward Avenue. 

When is it?

Doors open at 7:30; movie starts at 8 p.m.

How much is it?

Free entry, but donations to the Woodbine, a local “experimental hub” are appreciated. 

To Kick Off Spring: A Market & A Show!

What is it?

The Bushwick club Our Wicked Lady is hosting a multi-floor event that features DJs, bands and market vendors. Find info about those here. Food will be be served by a pop-up called Jazzy/Thicc-Fil-A. This is a 21 and over event. 

Where is it?

Our Wicked Lady, 153 Morgan Avenue. 

When is it?

The market will take place downstairs from 5 p.m. to 11 p.m, with a DJ spinning from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. Bands will start hitting the rooftop from 8 p.m. to 11 p.m. After the bands, a DJ will take over the rooftop from 11 p.m. to 2 a.m. 

How much is it?

$11.33 for the shows. The market is free.

The Rainbow Collection at The Thames Art Center!

What is it?

The opening of The Rainbow Collection,” an exhibition of custom art dolls put together by an artist named Negin Keyhanfar and purportedly inspired by the rainbow cast used the ceiling of local greenhouse. The collection had been five years in the making when Keyhanfar arrived in the United States – each is handmade and inspired by a specific person in Keyhanfar’s life and the number twelve, which Keyhanfar says has mythic associations. Hence: twelve sculptures. This event runs from March 25 to March 27.

Get A Job at the Hope Gardens Community Center Job Fair!

What is it?

A community center located inside the Hope Garden projects is hosting a job fair and all are welcome to dress to impress with a résumé in hand. Check out their post on Instagram to view some of the jobs that will be taking applications.

A Fundraiser For Mayday’s May Day Festival!

What is it?

Later in the year, Mayday is running its Festival of Resistance on the first one May, celebrated by some as International Workers Day. If you want to join a little earlier, Starr Bar is putting on a fundraiser there that will feature performances by local musical acts, DJs, resource tables from an array of community organizations and art-making activities for kids. Get ready to move to the sounds of Bruja Rebel, Manifesto and Soulhandles. Also featured: a unique signature cocktail created by the bar for the event.

Make Feminist Collages at Mayday!

What is it?

Over at Mayday proper, a group called Feminist Collages NYC are holding a workshop focusing on how to create and paint slogans and make wheat paste.

Snack & Spray! A Graffiti 101 Art Class

What is it?

Kids four and over are invited to learn about the art of using spray paint. All materials are included.

LGBTQ+ Friendly Boxing!

What is it?

Break a sweat with coaches Colline Marie and Max at an LGBTQ+ friendly boxing class. Check out Outbox Gym’s Instagram for their LGBTQ+ Boxing schedule, as well as other programs and classes they offer..
