The Bushwick Starr Gala is coming back, and this year the theater is throwing it at Rule of Thirds, the Japanese restaurant in Greenpoint. The Bushwick Starr announced the return in a June 18 email to supporters, calling the venue “beautiful and delicious” and promising a night built around a “cosmic disco glam rock” theme.
The Starr says it plans to transform the space to “maximize mingling, discovery and dancing.” The theater teased a glitter-planets-and-guitars concept with lightning bolt, disco ball, and rocket emoji, but hasn’t shared other details. It told readers to “stay tuned for all the details that will make this year’s Gala truly out of this world.”
The Starr did not include a date, time, or ticket information in the announcement. The theater called it an early heads-up: “You heard it here first.”
The gala is the annual fundraiser for The Bushwick Starr, the 419 Eldert Street theater that has spent years as an incubator for new work in the neighborhood. The gala moves from Bushwick to Greenpoint this year.
The email also covered the Starr’s June fundraising push for its Education and Community programs, a campaign to raise $25,000 by June 30 to cover teaching artist salaries, classroom supplies, and field trips. The theater hit that $25,000 goal, funding programs for students it describes as ages 9 to 90.
The email also mentioned an offer from another Brooklyn arts group. Leimay Resource Sharing is giving artists free rehearsal time at CAVE, its studio at 58 Grand Street, through a first-come, first-served booking program that runs until it hits 1,000 hours. Leimay’s rehearsal cycle runs from August 1 through September 30.
