Orquesta Akokán plays at Knitting Factory!

What is it?

Cuban/New York big band Orquesta Akokán released a new album late last year called 16 Rayos on Brooklyn’s Daptone Records. Now, they’re playing Knitting Factory in East Williamsburg. Here’s a quote from their press release: “The band imbues these legendary Cuban grooves with a renewed vitality and powerful sense of akokán, the Yoruba word used by Cubans to mean ‘from the heart’ or ‘soul.’” The evening also features performances by Bulla en el Barrio and DJ Mickey Perez

Midlife Crisis Presents “Public Access: Live!”

What is it?

Co-hosted by Jake Brush, JoJo and @kielysweatt, catch performances by Bri Joy, multi-disciplinary artist and tarot reader, art-rock trio from Brooklyn, Bugs in the Dark and musical act, Grey Cat. Special guest appearance by Christeene and music later in the evening by DJ Gay Panic

Where is it?

Our Wicked Lady, 153 Morgan Avenue. 

When is it?

Doors open at 7 p.m., show starts at 8 p.m. and DJ GayPanic will be spinning from 10 p.m. to close. 

How much is it?

$13.60 in advance; $15 at the door. 

Tender Bois Club Presents: A “Bois Night Out”!

What is it?

Tender Bois Club is music and creative production house that “celebrates softness, cultivates joy, and creates culture” and they’re is running a party that’s purportedly for the bois and their besties. Proof of vaccination is required.

Starr Bar, 214 Starr Street

When is it? 

10 p.m. to 2 a.m.

Free.

Pull Up To An Art Market!

What is it?

Pull up at this pop up and support some artists working in a lot of different mediums For more details on participating vendors, click here

Free. 

Mayday Festival of Resistance

What is it?

Its International Workers Day this weekend and to celebrate a bunch of groups are having speakers “talk about recent wins by workers on the frontlines and other ongoing labor struggles across NYC,” according to Time Out magazine.

Where is it?

Maria Hernandez Park

When is it?

1 p.m. to 7 p.m.

How much is it?

Free to register, but donations are accepted. 


Monday, May 2

Volunteer with The Breakfast Collective!

What is it?

The Breakfast Collective is a group with a stated mission of feeding the homeless in the Myrtle-Broadway area and they do this on Mondays. Volunteer shifts include preparing and making the food – usually egg and cheese sandwiches – packing up the car, distributing the breakfasts and driving. 

Where is it?

Myrtle-Broadway. 

When is it?

Weekly on Mondays. Shifts range from early morning, starting at 8:30 a.m., to early afternoon.
