Bushwick Art Crit Group is Meeting Tonight

by | 5.15.13 | 0 Comments

Fifteen artists all of whom have registered for this years Bushwick Open Studios will have exactly three minutes to explain what they are showing during BOS, and why it is important. Jen Hitchings, Meenakshi Thurikode, Wendy Klemperer or Kweighbaye Kotee from Bushwick Film Festival are among the invited artists to participate in this “intellectual vernissage.”

Bushwick Art Crit Group is a newly formed “networking and creative development community that seeks to give Bushwick artists a nurturing place to share about their work, and to receive feedback,” says their website. Tonight at 7PM, the group will meet for the second time at the gallery of Brooklyn Fire Proof under the lead of artist Christopher Stout who founded the initiative. The admission is free, and everybody is welcomed to join the discussion.

Bushwick Art Crit Group was launched in March 2013, and meets bi-monthly. To learn more about tonight’s event, check out our Events Calendar and read an article by Holly Shen Chaves at Arts in Bushwick Blog.

We were going to preview the new Daft Punk album this week on Listening Party but iTunes, and possibly every other music publication from here to Uranus, seemed to beat us to the punch. Instead, we’d like to introduce Bushwick to an equally discolicious, albeit darker, producer Antoni Maiovvi who focuses his music energy on what he deems ‘Giallo Disco. For the uninitiated ‘Giallo’ is an Italian crime drama film genre featuring stylistic elements of erotic horror. Mix that up with a little italo-disco and you have the ever suspenseful sounds of Antoni Maiovvi.

Dirty Talk with Margot Berwin: Diamonds Are a Bitch’s Best Friend

I was dining with a friend of mine who just got engaged. She was complaining, but kind of bragging in a backhanded way, about getting married. And every once in a while she would throw in something like “don’t worry you’ll find your guy soon.” I’m pretty ok with my life. I have a great job, close friends, and lots of fun, but I left the restaurant feeling like crap. Why do women do this to each other?

I don’t know about you, but now that it’s getting warm out I’ve been craving some catfish. And if it’s been caramelized in a clay pot by a refreshingly friendly man from Chaozhou, well, that’s sublime. Now I can finally get my clay pot catfish fix at Falansai, a French–Vietnamese restaurant that just opened in Morgantown. Only two weeks into operation, but the owner, Henry Trieu, has already crafted a relaxed, beach-y atmosphere with bright mint walls and wide windows and bird cages hanging from the ceiling.

For most of us noobs who don’t know much of our city’s history, there was a large Occult movement that burst onto the scene during the late ’70s and ’80s. Stories of that movement led Phillip English to our lovely Bushwick and where he is today.

English and Joe Petersen opened Catland bookstore last February to accommodate the revival of the Occult scene that’s happening in Bushwick. “There’s a very young scene burgeoning in this neighborhood, which is one of the reasons we’re here,” English said.

Big projects planned for this year’s Bushwick Open Studios don’t seem to have any luck. First, Bushwick Basel was canceled. Now we have been informed that the exciting new cultural center at 299 Meserole, the soft launch of which was planned for May 14 to culminate during Bushwick Open Studios weekend, is also in danger.

Light Switch

By Adam Cecil

there is a light switch in my bathroom that does not connect to anything.

i would like to think
(romantically)
that instead of being a dead switch,
it connects by a mile-long wire to a lightbulb in a woman’s apartment,
maybe in brooklyn. (more…)
