Student leaders from schools in the Journalism for All program were set to present the newsroom plans they developed over winter break at a Student Gallery in Lower Manhattan on Friday, February 20, the NYC Youth Journalism Coalition said in an invitation announcing the event.
The gallery capped what the coalition described as an intensive training program in community-driven journalism, the School Newsroom Launchpad, in which participants prepared to bring new reporting practices back to their school publications. According to the coalition, each student surveyed their school community and worked with experts from the nonprofit newsroom Documented and Columbia University’s Brown Institute for Media Innovation before drafting an action plan for building out their school’s publication and newsroom workflow.
At the gallery, the coalition said, students would share those plans, which were tailored to serve the particular needs of each school community. The organizers said the program was aimed at cultivating what they called the next generation of journalists.
The event, scheduled from 1 to 3 p.m., was open to educators, families, newsrooms, city leaders and funders, the coalition said, describing those groups as the people making the program possible. The invitation said the specific location in Lower Manhattan would be shared with attendees after they confirmed their attendance.
