The NYC Mayor’s Office has launched a “Catch Them All” challenge for World Cup wrapped subway trains currently running across the city, according to a July 1 press email from Hamaad Najam, Deputy Press Secretary for the Mayor’s Office.
To participate, riders use the MTA app to track down the wrapped trains, then log their sighting through the “Add Yours” template on @nycmayor’s Instagram story. The Mayor’s Office is also encouraging participants to post videos in the format of “Come with me to find my country’s wrapped train.”
The challenge is part of City Hall’s World Cup programming. Five soccer fields, one in each borough, are available nightly for late-night 7v7 pickup through July 18, with a full schedule at nycopenplay.com. LinkNYC kiosks are streaming select matches across the five boroughs. Through a partnership with the Whitney Museum of American Art, anyone who downloads a World Cup poster guide, makes their own poster, and brings it to the Whitney gets free admission, with a special event featuring Host City Poster artist Rich Tu set for July 12.
Seven watch parties are also scheduled between July 2 and July 7, including screenings at Moore Street Market and Essex Market on July 5. A full list of open streets events and DOT watch parties is at the city’s DOT site.
The Mayor’s Office did not specify an end date for the “Catch Them All” challenge or whether there are any prizes for participation.
