Brooklyn Council Member Chi Ossé has been elected co-chair of the New York City Council’s LGBTQIA+ Caucus, his office announced February 9. He will serve alongside Council Member Justin Sanchez, a freshman representing the 17th Council District in the South Bronx.

Ossé and Sanchez succeed former co-chairs Tiffany Cabán and Crystal Hudson, both of whom remain active members of the caucus, according to the announcement from Ossé’s office. The office said the caucus plays a critical role in shaping the city’s legislative and budget priorities, ensuring LGBTQIA+ voices are included in City Hall’s decision-making.

“I’m honored to serve alongside my colleagues as co-chair of the LGBTQIA+ Caucus,” Ossé said in the statement. “At a moment when the LGBTQIA+ community is under attack by those wielding the highest levers of power, local government remains one of our strongest lines of defense. Our responsibility is to protect LGBTQIA+ New Yorkers, invest in the services they rely on, and ensure young queer people in this city can grow up safe, supported, and affirmed. We owe that to the generations who came before us and to the generations coming next.”

The caucus delegation includes both co-chairs, the former co-chairs and Council Members David Carr and Lynn Schulman, the office said. Ossé, who also co-chairs the Council’s Brooklyn delegation, represents a district covering Bedford-Stuyvesant and Crown Heights.
