Bushwick Library will close at the end of business on June 5, 2026 for a capital renovation expected to last approximately two years, Brooklyn Public Library announced in a notice sent to Community Board 1 on May 8.
The project includes a new roof, HVAC system improvements, and exterior brick repairs, according to the notice from Michael Fieni, Brooklyn Public Library’s Senior Director of Government & Community Relations. During the closure, BPL staff will work with community partners to offer library programs in the neighborhood, and a Bookmobile will make visits near the branch to help residents maintain access to library services.
There is one near-term exception to the shutdown: the library will remain available as a poll site for the June 23, 2026 Primary Election. Fieni noted in his notice to CB1 that active construction will not yet be underway at that point, allowing the NYC Board of Elections to operate there as scheduled.
Fieni also noted that Brooklyn Public Library and the New York City Department of Design and Construction are working to minimize any overlap between Bushwick Library’s temporary closure and a separate planned closure at Leonard Library, suggesting that branch is also facing a future temporary shutdown, though no timeline for Leonard Library was included in the notice.
