Brooklyn Borough President Antonio Reynoso Opens Applications for 2025 Community Board Members

Brooklyn Borough President Antonio Reynoso is calling on New York City residents to apply for positions on Brooklyn’s 18 community boards. These boards are the most local level of government, and they weigh in on important issues like land use, liquor licenses, and transportation. Brooklyn has more community boards than any other borough, and each board is made up of up to 50 volunteers from the community.

Community boards work with city agencies and local leaders to ensure community needs and perspectives are included in decisions that impact their neighborhoods. This includes everything from housing development and public transit to the city’s budget. The issues that each board focuses on depend on the people on the board, which is why it’s important for local residents to get involved.

Community boards are venues for community power when they accurately represent their communities and have the resources they need. Reynoso hopes to see more applications from “renters, public housing residents, young people, mass transit users, and skilled trade workers,” but says anyone with a passion for the borough is welcome to apply.

Community board members must attend monthly meetings in person from September through June, as well as join a committee and attend committee meetings. The monthly time commitment is around 6 to 8 hours. To be eligible, you must be an NYC resident, 16 years or older, who lives, works, or has a significant interest in a community.

Applications are open until February 14, 2025, at 11 P.M.. Interested candidates can learn more and apply here. The application process involves an online form and a brief virtual conversation with a member of the Brooklyn Borough President’s team.
