There is now an ice cream in Williamsburg that you have to sign a waiver to eat. Ample Hills Creamery and Heatonist, the hot sauce shop of “Hot Ones” fame, are calling it Sweet Regret, and according to MST Creative PR, which represents both brands, it is the spiciest ice cream in NYC.
The two Brooklyn brands teamed up on three spicy flavors, and Sweet Regret is the one at the far end. It is made with the Carolina Reaper, one of the world’s hottest peppers, which the press materials clock at 1.5 to 2.2 million Scoville Heat Units. Because of that heat, MST Creative PR says the shop makes you sign a waiver before your first bite.
Through July, anyone who orders Sweet Regret and finishes the whole thing in the store gets it free. There is no time limit. The scoop normally runs $7.95, and if you clear the cup, you get a $10 gift card, according to MST Creative PR. The publicist says guests who have already taken it on have been filming their reactions, which she described as priceless.
The base is sweet cream ice cream blended with strawberries, strawberry purée and red beet, which gives it a bright, strawberry-forward flavor before the Reaper catches up. It comes in its own “Little Dipper” mini cup, served with a small carton of milk on the side for relief.
Jazmin Green, a long-time Ample Hills ice cream maker and Brooklyn resident, developed the lineup with the Heatonist team, ranging from mild to wild. The other two flavors are Hot Mango, a vegan sorbet with mango, Tajín and cayenne, and Devil’s Food, a chocolate ice cream with chocolate brownies and cayenne.
For the Williamsburg crowd, the draw is the pop-up. Ample Hills is parking an ice cream cart outside Heatonist at 121 Wythe Ave on weekends, Saturdays and Sundays from noon to 8 p.m., through July 26. The cart carries a selection of flavors including the waiver-required Sweet Regret. One catch, per MST Creative PR: Devil’s Food and Hot Mango are only sold at Ample Hills locations, not at the Heatonist cart.
The Sweet Regret Challenge itself runs at all four Ample Hills stores and the Heatonist pop-up. Those stores are in Prospect Heights at 623 Vanderbilt Ave, at The Social at 816 Washington Ave, on the Upper West Side at 526 Amsterdam Ave, and in Astoria at 34-02 30th Ave.
