Tucked away at 214 Knickerbocker Avenue, Sweet and Shiny is easy to miss. It opened three years ago as a full cafe space, with help of a Kickstarter campaign.

Now you might know it as that adorable walk-up window across from 3 Diamond Door, pastry case full of cupcakes, Dough doughnuts, breakfast sandwiches, and more. But for locals, it’s been the spot to go for an elaborate, detail-oriented cake individually tailored for any special occasion.

Those cakes were made with care by owner Elaine Li, who posted Sweet and Shiny’s intent to sell late last week via their Instagram.

With a new baby on the way, and the backyards, fresh air, and no rush hour commute of her hometown of Ohio calling, Li felt it was time to make a change.

“The shop has grown so much since I opened,” she emailed us. “It’s amazing the local support and the following that has quickly developed- I’m sad to let go but the NYC lifestyle is too hard to juggle with two small kids and a business!”

Without Li’s cake decorating skills, Sweet and Shiny is likely to see a drastic overhaul as ownership changes hands, but she is open to different options. Since last year, she’s partnered with Umi Bushwick to create a late night pop up menu, and has hoped to find more small businesses with which to do the same. Partnerships with current management are also on the table. Employee and friend Sarah Hingley expounds the potential benefits of utilizing the extensive back space as a kitchen commissary, while maintaining the unique front space as is.

Definitely a spot to keep an eye on as it goes through this growing period. We wish the best of luck to Elaine, and are excited to see what the future brings for Sweet and Shiny.
