Today is the 43rd anniversary of Roe v. Wade, a landmark decision of the Supreme Court on abortions. To celebrate and further empower women to control their own bodies, a local chapter of #ShoutYourAbortion initiative, is organizing a fundraising event for the New York Abortion Access Fund (NYAAF).

At The Living Gallery (1094 Broadway) starting at 6:30PM, Bushwick will respond to the nation-wide call #TogetherForAbortion for simultaneous actions and events.

Laurel Leckert, one of the Shout Your Abortion Collective members told us that we are to expect evening of presentations about history and current events surrounding abortion, people sharing their personal stories, raffle prizes including a toy from Toys in Babeland, art, food, drink, and celebration of women’s right to control over her body and her life. “This will be one of many conversations among women and non-cis-males about our abortions in a welcoming environment,” Laurel said.

The collective has created a zine compiling personal narratives and art about people’s abortion experiences to be launched tonight as well.

The speakers are starting at 7:30PM.  Musical performance by Bi Tyrant goes on at 8:30PM. You can stop by at the tables from NYAAF, Bluestockings, a radical feminist artist, #AbortionLooksLike, and more.

Entry is free, but all proceeds from food and beverage sales are to benefit the New York Abortion Access Fund, (NYAAF).

#ShoutYourAbortion was started on the internet in September last year by women who had abortions. Amelia Bonow posted on Facebook that she had had an abortion at a Planned Parenthood clinic in Seattle last year. Her goal was to encourage women who kept their abortions secret to speak up in an effort to reframe the public conversation. Soon Lindy West, a writer for Jezebel created hashtag #ShoutYourAbortion, which went viral and drew more than 150,000 Twitter posts.
