Smack Mellon, the nonprofit arts organization at 92 Plymouth Street in DUMBO, is hosting an opening reception for a 30th anniversary exhibition on Saturday, September 19, from 6 to 8 PM, according to a July 2026 email from the organization.
The title of the exhibition and the artists featured have not yet been announced. Smack Mellon’s galleries are closed for the summer and will reopen in the fall for the show.
Smack Mellon’s stated mission is to nurture and support emerging, under-recognized mid-career, and women artists by providing exhibition opportunities, studio workspace, and access to equipment and technical assistance for ambitious projects. The anniversary marks three decades of that work in Brooklyn.
The July email also announced the six artists selected for the 2026/27 Artist Studio cohort: Amy Bravo, Aparna Sarkar, Asia Stewart, Enrique Garcia, Judy Chung, and Soeun Bae. All six are NYC-based emerging artists working in a diverse array of practices, according to Smack Mellon. Each resident receives a private studio, a stipend, and access to equipment for an eleven-month period, along with financial, technical, and administrative support from Smack Mellon. The cohort is set to move into studios in September.
Smack Mellon is also accepting applications for its annual Emerging Curator Open Call through August 15, 2026. The selected curator will organize an Emerging Artists Summer Group Exhibition across the organization’s two gallery spaces, slated to open during summer 2027. The organization is looking for projects that engage with political, social, or environmental issues.
Smack Mellon’s programs receive support from the New York City Department of Cultural Affairs, the New York State Council on the Arts, the Andy Warhol Foundation for the Visual Arts, and a range of other foundations.
