“We opened last Tuesday,” said a girl smiling behind the counter at Hi Mango. The newest addition to the natural grocery stores in the area just opened on 1055 Flushing Ave. After a tweet from @palekid I was really curious whether Hi Mango will be good alternative to get some quality food and produce or essentially a really healthy rip off.
I went to do my regular basic shopping on Sunday afternoon. You know, yogurt-vegetables-kind of stuff. (Also please note that I am a vegetarian, so no meat on my shopping list… ).
The store looks nice with a some good deals on produce right at the entrance.

Organic baby kale for $2.99 – big time WIN! Normally you can buy this very same product for like $4.99…

Oh well, they didn’t have my cat’s favorite food. But the big can of Wellness cat food is for $1.99. (Higher) average.

It was the International Ice Cream Day yesterday so I HAD to buy ice cream. This pint of vegan coconut+cinnamon cookie deliciousness was for $4.99.

If you tell the cashier that it’s your first time at Hi Mango, you’ll get a free cute, cat-themed shopping bag. Yes!
Overall, the shopping experience at Hi Mango is a nice one. You can get really good deals on produce but otherwise the prices are in (higher) average. As a vegetarian I was a little disappointed about the lack of soy products besides ordinary tofu. Luckily the cat-themed shopping bag made it better…

HI! I’ve shopped at Hi Mango Natural Market also. Their interior design looks fabulous and they also do sampling for their fruits and wraps they make. I also received a cute little bag, which I can use for shopping whenever I go there. It is very convenient!! I also wrote a comment of what I wanted from their store. I also consider it cheaper than BK Naturals. (Well, in my opinion). But this article was great! Thanks to you Kat, I discovered a new supermarket!
Check the dates on everything you buy. I was in love with this place when it opened but have since discovered that there’s a lot of old product. .99c big container of strawberries was a good deal and they looked good but tasted sour. Crudités same thing. My girlfriend just bought mozzerella, brought it home, date on it was today’s date but it tasted sour. She brought it back and they gave her a really hard time returning it. The manager was laughing at her. “what tasted weird about it?” “it’s sour” conversation should have ended there but it went round and round.
thanks for this comment, Brandon. of course there is a catch

Like Brandon said, I also noticed expired products. I bought stale rice cakes – they were only 1.99 so I didn’t bother returning them… and a container of watermelon that was gross and soft.
1 other thing that’s super odd is if you order a sandwich or wrap from the deli it takes like 15 minutes for them to make it! This has happened several times when I was the only person in there and there were 2 guys behind the counter – I seriously don’t understand what they’re doing back there for so long and why it would take that long to make a turkey wrap?! My favorite spot for sandwiches is still L-Mo’s those guys are professionals.
