A dance form that started in underground Black and LGBTQ+ clubs in 1970s Los Angeles is coming to Brooklyn. On July 26, Waack To The Future: Waack X K-Pop comes to 3 Dollar Bill, featuring Lip J, a star of the South Korean dance competition show “Street Woman Fighter,” according to a press release emailed to Bushwick Daily by Princess Lockerooo.
Princess Lockerooo, who describes herself as an internationally recognized choreographer, educator, and one of the leading figures preserving the history and legacy of Waacking, organized the event. The New York Times called her “The Queen Of Waacking” in a 2020 profile. Her credits include work with Madonna and an appearance on “Dancing With The Stars,” per the release.
Waacking, according to the release, originated in the underground Black and LGBTQ+ club scene in Los Angeles in the 1970s. It has spread internationally, and South Korea now has major waacking dancers.
Lip J represents that global trajectory. The event is “a rare opportunity to capture the journey of Waacking across generations, cultures, and continents,” according to the release.
