The MTA says pulling the G train out of service is worth it, because it’s the only way to finally drag the Brooklyn-Queens line’s signals into the modern era. That’s according to the New York Daily News, which reported on July 19 that the agency is defending the shutdowns as necessary to install a new train-control system.
The upgrade is the same technology the MTA has already put on the L train, the No. 7, and portions of the E, F, M and R, per the Daily News. It lets the agency track exactly where each train is on the line, the foundation for running trains closer together and more reliably than the decades-old signals it replaces.
For riders in and around Bushwick, East Williamsburg and Greenpoint, this is the crosstown line that never touches Manhattan. The G stitches together North Brooklyn on its own, and it shares the modernization playbook that the L, the neighborhood’s other workhorse, already went through.
The schedule is public, and it stings. After June ran four straight weekends with no service north of Bedford-Nostrand, the announced closures take out two weekends in August, one in September and three more in December, part of 19 weekend closures across 2026, nearly 40 percent of the year’s weekends, Brooklyn Magazine tallied.
When the new signals actually switch on is the murkier question. The MTA’s 2024 announcement said the signal project would be completed by 2027; a consultant’s assessment last year said the work wouldn’t be completed until July 2029, per the same Brooklyn Magazine report.
