If you ever got pinned against the stage in the front room at Saint Vitus, the bar is coming back. The black-walled Brooklyn metal venue that the city shut down in the middle of a hardcore set in 2024 will reopen this fall in Bushwick.
Saint Vitus announced the move in an Instagram video posted July 3, a clip that runs the venue’s mannequin mascot, Günther, before revealing the new address. The bar will reopen this fall at 428 Troutman Street, taking over the former home of Brooklyn Made, a Bushwick music venue that closed after a little over three years in February 2025. The new address already ran as a live-music venue under its previous tenant, not a raw storefront someone has to convert.
Saint Vitus opened in Greenpoint in 2011 and ran for more than a decade before the city ended it without warning. Following a city inspection, the Department of Buildings closed the venue during a hardcore show after determining it lacked the proper permits to operate as a live music venue. Gothamist reported the bar was found to be operating as an illegal eating and drinking establishment, with paperwork on file only for a commercial store and the storage of machinery. The city ruled that on paper the building was a shop and a place to keep machines, and it enforced that ruling live: city officials shut it down in the middle of a hardcore band’s performance.
After opening in 2011, the 250-capacity venue became a bucket-list stop for heavy music fans. The small black box hosted local hardcore bands and surprise sets by major acts, including members of Nirvana, Blink-182, Megadeth and Anthrax.
The operation never fully died. Since losing its physical space, Vitus has been booking and promoting shows across the boroughs under the name Vitus Presents, keeping the name alive for two years without a room of its own while it searched for a new one. Now it has found it, a short move south from the old Greenpoint address into Bushwick.
The venue is coming back with the same name, the same mannequin mascot, and the same team that has been booking under the Vitus Presents banner since the Greenpoint room went dark. It moves from Greenpoint to Bushwick and trades the shuttered space fans grew up in for the former Brooklyn Made stage on Troutman Street.
The comeback even pulled a public cheer out of state government. “For 15 years, Saint Vitus has been holding it down for underground music in New York City,” Assemblymember Keith Powers said, calling it fantastic news that Vitus gets a new direction and new home.
The venue has not announced an exact opening day. The announcement named a season, fall 2026, not a date, and it did not say whether the Troutman Street room will carry the cramped, sweat-soaked feel of the Greenpoint space that fans mourned. It also has not said whether the programming will pick up where it left off. Those answers are still to come.
