Tatiana Pettus, 24, was shot in the neck inside her basement apartment on Foster Avenue in Flatbush around 11:30 p.m. Tuesday, according to the NYPD. She was pronounced dead at Kings County Hospital a short time later, according to the Daily News and AMNY.
Investigators believe Pettus was shot during a fight with her boyfriend, police sources told both outlets. Detectives have identified the boyfriend as the prime suspect. He remained at large as of Wednesday morning and no arrests have been made.
The couple had a child together, relatives wrote on Facebook. “He kill my niece leaving their young child parentless,” Sabata Pettus posted, according to the Daily News.
Pettus’s father declined to speak in detail. “I’m not interested in talking to nobody about my daughter. This is a private matter,” he told the Daily News. “I’ll tell you this, she was a good girl.”
Officers from the 67th Precinct received the 911 call at around 11:25 p.m. and gained access to the basement unit on arrival, AMNY reported. AMNY, citing sources familiar with the investigation, said the boyfriend’s mother placed the 911 call. The Daily News reported that neighbors heard an argument and called 911. The accounts conflict.
Police were canvassing the area for surveillance footage to help track where the suspect went after the shooting, the Daily News reported.
Neighbors described Pettus as a relatively new tenant. Building resident Kadeem Alfred told the Daily News he had first seen her the previous Saturday and believed she moved in around December. “This building is a private, quiet building. I lived here a very long time,” fellow resident Jimmy Sosa told the Daily News. “It’s shocking.”
AMNY identified the building’s address as 2817 Foster Ave. in the section of Brooklyn known as Little Haiti. The Daily News and El Diario identified the location as Flatbush.
