New York City Public Advocate Jumaane D. Williams was scheduled to make an announcement Wednesday about the digital divide and affordable internet service in the city, his office said in a press advisory.
Williams planned to discuss the need to lower costs for New Yorkers who, according to his office, bear the brunt of the digital divide. The office said the Bronx pays the highest average monthly cost for the slowest average internet speeds among the five boroughs. As a result, the office said, Bronx residents pay nearly double what Manhattan residents pay and devote the largest share of their income to internet costs.
The press conference was set for noon Wednesday at 460 Grand Street on Manhattan’s Lower East Side, the office said. Williams was expected to be joined by elected officials, technology advocates and tenants. The advisory did not include details of the plan the public advocate intended to put forward.
The internet announcement was one stop on a full schedule for Williams that day, according to his office, which also listed remarks ahead of Eid al-Adha prayer in Brooklyn, a rally at City Hall to protect the New York City Commission on Human Rights, and an Instagram Live for Tourette Syndrome Awareness Month with singer Jamie Grace.
