New York State Inspector General Lucy Lang discussed how her office is trying to draw everyday New Yorkers into government oversight at the 203rd CityLaw Breakfast on Tuesday, April 14, the Offices of the New York State Inspector General said in a media advisory.
The talk, titled “Bringing the Public Into Public Integrity,” ran from 8:30 a.m. to 9:45 a.m. at the New York Law School Events Center, 185 West Broadway in Lower Manhattan, according to the advisory. The office said Lang would lay out how it is strengthening oversight across state government through deeper public engagement, and why ordinary residents play a role in identifying, reporting and preventing misconduct.
The advisory framed the appearance as arriving “at a moment of heightened attention to ethics and trust in government,” and said the conversation would offer a practical look at how public integrity efforts are evolving and how the public can directly contribute. Lang has cast the push in starker terms, telling amNewYork: “At a time when public trust in government is at historic lows and the foundation of our democracy is under attack, I see the 250th anniversary of our [country] as a call to action to bring the public into public integrity.”
The Inspector General’s office describes its mission as fostering confidence in state government by promoting integrity and transparency through oversight of covered agencies, their employees and those doing business with the state, according to the advisory. The office said New Yorkers can report wrongdoing by calling 1-800-DO-RIGHT or visiting ig.ny.gov.
