The Office of the New York State Inspector General held a special event at the New York State Museum, 222 Madison Avenue, Albany, on the evening of January 28 to mark the 40th anniversary of the office, the agency announced in a notice to subscribers that day. The program, titled “Illustrious Strangers at 250: Inspectors General and the American Democratic Tradition,” was convened by Inspector General Lucy Lang.

The office described the gathering as a commemoration of four decades of its work, which it framed under the theme of public integrity. The milestone marks the 40th anniversary of the creation of the Offices of the New York State Inspector General. The agency’s bare subscriber email did not detail the program’s speakers or agenda, though the office’s public advisory listed the event for 6 to 8 p.m. at the museum.

Under state law, the Office of the Inspector General is the state’s principal watchdog against fraud, corruption and abuse in New York government, charged with investigating complaints concerning corruption, fraud, criminal activity, conflicts of interest or abuse in any covered agency, their employees and entities doing business with the state. The agency announced the anniversary event through its official email newsletter under the subject line “Tonight: NYS Inspector General Marks 40th Anniversary with Special Event at NYS Museum.”

The New York State Museum is located in Albany. Spectrum News 1 reported the inspector general’s office “is responsible for the internal oversight of government offices.”
