The New York Press Club will gather working journalists for a conversation on New York City’s mayoral transition on Tuesday, February 24, featuring Katie Honan of The City and Chris Sommerfeldt of Politico’s New York Playbook, according to a media advisory from DJC Communications issued on behalf of the club. The two reporters will discuss the handoff from Mayor Eric Adams to Mayor Zohran Mamdani and weigh in on Mamdani’s first few weeks in office, the advisory said, with a question-and-answer session to follow.
The event runs from 6 to 8 p.m. at The Beltane, 10 East 16th St., between Fifth Avenue and Union Square West, the advisory said. Admission is free, though the club noted that guests will cover the cost of their own drinks and food orders, and that attendees must register in advance by email.
According to the club, the gathering is the first in a series of networking events planned throughout the year, structured as a monthly after-work mixer pairing programming with time for journalists to build relationships and trade insights. The club said the recurring sessions are meant to spark discussion about the opportunities and challenges facing the field, from legacy newsrooms continuing work audiences have relied on for generations to the rise of nonprofit outlets and new models of independent journalism. The club framed the events as a chance for both newsroom veterans and early-career reporters to find solidarity with colleagues navigating a rapidly evolving media landscape.
