Mayor Zohran Mamdani plans to spend Saturday, February 21, moving among several Harlem and Manhattan events tied to civil rights leaders, beginning with a tribute to the Rev. Jesse L. Jackson, Sr. alongside the Rev. Al Sharpton, according to public schedules released by the mayor’s press office.
The mayor will join Sharpton at 10:30 a.m. for the National Action Network’s “Keep Hope Alive” tribute to Jackson at Mother AME Zion Church, 140 W. 137th St., the press office said. The Network listed the overall tribute as running from 9 to 11 a.m., with 10:30 a.m. the mayor’s scheduled arrival within the event. That portion of the day is open to press.
At 11:30 a.m., Mamdani will attend the annual meeting of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People, the office said. That event is closed to press.
The mayor will then hold a press conference to provide weather updates and take questions, the press office said in its most recent advisory, listing the briefing at 1:30 p.m. at the Spring Street Salt Shed, 336 Spring St. An earlier version of Saturday’s schedule had placed that briefing at 12:30 p.m. The office said the press conference would be streamed live.
Later in the day, Mamdani is scheduled to deliver remarks at the 61st Annual Commemoration for the Life and Legacy of El-Hajj Malik El-Shabazz, Malcolm X. The most recent advisories listed those remarks for approximately 7:00 p.m., while an earlier version of the schedule had set the time at 7:30 p.m. The press office said media interested in attending must RSVP to [email protected].
The press office noted that the Malcolm X commemoration would be streamed live and that photos from the day’s events would be made available through the mayor’s office. The advisories were issued for planning purposes only.
