An online job portal tied to Mayor Zohran Mamdani’s administration drew roughly 80,000 applicants and resulted in only 31 hires, according to a figure surfaced by the news outlet THE CITY in its newsletter on February 6.
The disparity between the volume of applications and the small number of people ultimately hired was the central point flagged by THE CITY, which put the portal’s overall success rate at 0.039%. Those 31 portal hires account for roughly 21% of the 149 people hired to City Hall, the outlet reported, and include new Transportation Commissioner Mike Flynn. The outlet did not, in the material available to Bushwick Daily, detail how the portal screened the applicant pool.
The precise 31-hire figure is unique to THE CITY and has not been independently confirmed by Bushwick Daily. The scale of the applicant pool, however, has been corroborated elsewhere: Fortune reported in December that more than 74,000 people had applied for roles in the new administration, and NY1 reported the transition team was sorting through 72,000 resumes by mid-December.
