Protests are continuing outside Delaney Hall, the immigration detention center where ICE has described the people it is holding as “the worst of the worst,” according to Hell Gate, which flagged the ongoing demonstrations in its June 8 newsletter.
The federal government’s own numbers contradict this. As a New York Times investigation found, “the federal government’s own data…indicates that people with criminal convictions account for just a fraction of the detainees.”
The protests, per Hell Gate, are aimed at both the conditions inside the facility and the way ICE has publicly described the people locked up there.
The specifics are thin. The reporting does not say what protesters are demanding, how many people have been turning out, or the status of those detained inside. ICE’s response to the Times investigation has not been reported here.
