Hunter College swept Baruch College in both games of the 20th annual Battle of Lexington, the City University of New York said, with the Hunter Hawks beating the Baruch Bearcats 81-53 in the women’s game and 68-58 in the men’s game.
The matchup, which CUNY said it celebrated Feb. 5, is a two-decade basketball rivalry between the two CUNY colleges located on Lexington Avenue, pitting their men’s and women’s teams against each other. According to the university, this year’s women’s faceoff featured Hunter’s Alexa Charles, whom CUNY described as currently the top scorer across all three NCAA divisions of women’s basketball. The university said Charles led her team to victory in both this year’s and last year’s battle.
“We always look forward to moments like the Battle of Lexington where we can cheer on our students together, even from opposite sides of the bleachers,” CUNY Chancellor Félix V. Matos Rodríguez said in a statement. “We also take great pride in being the home of NCAA women’s basketball’s leading scorer Alexa Charles and congratulate her on this enormous achievement. Our student-athletes never fail to impress us as they excel on the court and in the classroom.”
CUNY said the Battle of Lexington came as the two colleges’ teams compete for the CUNY Athletic Conference championships, which the university said would be decided later in February on the teams’ respective campuses. More on Charles’s record-setting season is available through Hunter College.
