Bushwick Celebrates Puerto Rican Heritage with Knickerbocker Avenue Parade Led by Congresswoman Velázquez

This Sunday, June 8th, at 3 pm, Bushwick’s Knickerbocker Avenue will transform into a vibrant wave of Puerto Rican pride and culture as the community kicks off its 7th annual Puerto Rican Day Parade. The event, free and open to all, promises an afternoon brimming with the rhythms of salsa, the flair of traditional Puerto Rican attire, and the unbreakable spirit of community. At the helm of this year’s parade is none other than Congresswoman Nydia Velázquez, a trailblazer for Puerto Ricans in the U.S. Congress, serving as the Grand Marshal under the theme ‘Building Bridges: Connecting Generations of Puerto Rican Heritage.’

Starting from Menahan Street and Jefferson Street to Maria Hernandez Park, attendees can expect a full display of Puerto Rican culture, as envisioned by local leaders and the sponsoring organization, RiseBoro. DJ Carlito, a Bushwick native and self-proclaimed ‘Bushwick’s Finest,’ encapsulates the local pride on Instagram, expressing excitement over bringing ‘joy and good vibes’ to the neighborhood celebration. He reminiscences, ‘Growing up in Bushwick, Brooklyn, the second weekend of June has always been one for the books. It’s a time to celebrate and represent our vibrant BORICUA culture.’

This year’s theme not only celebrates the rich cultural contributions that Puerto Ricans bring to Bushwick but also shines a light on the influential women who bridge generational gaps. According to the Knickerbocker Puerto Rican Parade Committee, the theme ‘highlights how influential women in the community have bridged generational gaps, blending traditional Puerto Rican culture with modern activism.’ This narrative of unity, resilience, and the enduring importance of passing down Puerto Rican values underscores the parade’s broader significance as more than just a celebration, but a conduit for cultural preservation and community empowerment.

As the parade gears up to fill Knickerbocker Avenue with music, dancing, and an undeniable sense of pride, it stands as a testament to the enduring connections and cultural bridges being built within the Bushwick community.
