The NYPD is deploying thousands of officers across New York City this weekend for a Fourth of July slate that includes the nation’s 250th Independence Day celebrations and security coverage for a private event at Madison Square Garden that the department declined to name, according to the New York Daily News.
That event is Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce’s wedding, expected at MSG on Saturday. Commissioner Jessica Tisch confirmed the NYPD conducted a threat assessment of it, pointing to a foiled terror plot that targeted a Swift concert in Europe in 2024. She still would not name the couple at the Wednesday press briefing. “While giving a briefing about major events I would be remiss not to mention an event we are tracking at Madison Square Garden,” Tisch said. “The NYPD will have a detail in place, but we will not be going into more specifics.”
The larger mobilization is for the city’s 250th Independence Day programming, which Tisch described as “the largest Independence Day celebration in our nation’s history.” Officers will work 12-hour shifts through the weekend. Aviation, harbor, and counter-drone teams will be deployed alongside bomb-sniffing K-9 units and heavy weapons teams, Tisch said.
Mayor Zohran Mamdani appeared alongside Tisch at NYPD headquarters in Lower Manhattan for the briefing. “This is a busy celebratory time in our city with multiple major events,” Mamdani said. “We have a comprehensive security plan for each event, which begins with increasing deployment of officers across the five boroughs.”
Saturday morning brings the Sail4th250, a parade of tall ships through New York Harbor that is being billed as the largest such parade in American history. Each passing ship will fire a 21-gun salute. NYPD Harbor units will be stationed in both the East and Hudson Rivers, with the department coordinating with the U.S. Coast Guard and the Navy, Mamdani said. Saturday evening, Macy’s is putting on what the department described as its largest-ever fireworks display, featuring more than 850,000 explosives, a laser light show, and multiple fireworks barges.
If you are planning to be at either the tall ships event or the fireworks, leave the big bag and the lawn chair at home. No large bags, lawn chairs, or coolers are permitted at viewing areas, Tisch said. The MTA will run additional trains, and everyone is encouraged to take public transit. The Brooklyn Bridge will be closed to vehicle traffic for most of Saturday.
Tisch said there are no credible threats against any of the weekend’s events, but noted the NYPD is operating in what she called “a heightened threat environment” because of overseas conflicts and a recent run of terror attacks and targeted violence in the U.S. and other countries.
The weekend ends Sunday with multiple street closures throughout Midtown Manhattan in preparation for a FIFA World Cup game.
