BKROT, the Bushwick composting collective that hauls food scraps by bike and turns them into what it calls “black gold,” will set up a booth at the Bushwick Starr’s free summer bazaar on Saturday, August 1, the group announced in its July newsletter.
The Starr Bazaar is part of Summers at the Starr, a free August series the theater runs to bring neighbors together through performances, music, workshops, community events, and local vendors. BKROT is one of those vendors. At its booth, the group will sell compost and merch “while celebrating the artistic spirit of Bushwick,” according to the newsletter.
If you don’t already know BKROT, its compost is hyperlocal from start to finish. The scraps are collected, processed, and distributed locally, all by hand or bike, according to the newsletter. The organization operates out of 124 Wyckoff Avenue and runs a microhauling operation that picks up food scraps fossil-fuel-free.
You can put a bag of that compost on your indoor plants or outdoor garden if you get to the booth. BKROT also takes compost orders online and warns that summer brings a waitlist for pickup.
BKROT will also sling compost and merch at the Brooklyn Children’s Food Festival on July 25, an event co-hosted by the Brooklyn Children’s Museum and Brooklyn Supported Agriculture with vendors including Black Girl Environmentalist, Green Beetz, OKO Farms, and Red Hook Initiative.
The Bushwick Starr has had a busy year of its own. The theater hit a $25,000 education fundraising goal earlier this month, money it said covers teaching artists, supplies, and field trips for students ages 9 to 90.
BKROT did not list booth hours for the August 1 bazaar in its newsletter. The group pointed readers to the Starr’s schedule page for the full lineup.
