Queens has its unofficial primary results, and a couple of sitting lawmakers are on the wrong side of them. The Board of Elections in the City of New York released election night totals with more than 94 percent of scanners reported, and the tallies, published July 1 by the Queens Gazette, project winners in races that will set the Democratic and Republican nominees for this fall’s general election across the borough, the city, and the state.
These are unofficial numbers. Absentee and affidavit ballots are still counted after election night, and the Board of Elections certifies results later, so nothing here is final. But with 94 percent of scanners in, the projected winners are clear in most races.
Two incumbents are trailing. In the 13th State Senate District, Jessica Gonzalez-Rojas leads with 6,476 votes, or 47.88 percent, ahead of incumbent Jessica Ramos at 5,024 votes, or 37.15 percent. Hiram Monserrate finished third with 1,966 votes, or 14.54 percent. In the 38th Assembly District, David Orkin leads incumbent Jenifer Rajkumar 3,722 to 2,588, which is 58.83 percent to 40.90 percent.
For readers in Ridgewood and the rest of northwest Queens, the local races run down the ballot. In the 12th State Senate District, Aber Kawas leads with 12,460 votes, or 60.17 percent, over Steven B. Raga at 8,166 votes, or 39.43 percent. In the 34th Assembly District, Brian Romero leads with 4,916 votes, or 66.85 percent, over Rosa Sanchez. In the 39th Assembly District, incumbent Catalina Cruz is running away with it at 90.87 percent, or 5,317 votes.
At the top of the congressional ballot, incumbent Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez leads the 14th Congressional District Democratic primary with 30,189 votes, or 86.94 percent, over Felipe Garcia and Marty Dolan. Incumbent Grace Meng leads the 6th Congressional District Democratic primary with 18,134 votes, or 56.85 percent, over Chuck Park at 42.87 percent.
In the statewide race atop the ticket, incumbent State Comptroller Thomas P. DiNapoli leads the Democratic primary with 575,629 votes statewide, or 61.25 percent, over Drew Warshaw at 18.73 percent and Raj Goyle at 12.90 percent. Counting New York City votes only, DiNapoli’s share climbs to 58.87 percent.
Down in the 7th Congressional District Democratic primary, the Queens Gazette’s tally lists Claire Valdez in front with 37,531 votes, or 56.06 percent, ahead of Antonio Reynoso at 35.79 percent, Julie Won at 6.32 percent, and Vichal Kumar at 1.69 percent. In the Queens Civil Court race, where voters picked two, Edmond Wong led with 30.92 percent and Julie M. Milner followed at 26.85 percent.
The Queens Gazette notes that the percentages do not total 100 percent because of write-in ballots. Citywide results are posted at vote.nyc.
