A Long Island Rail Road train struck and killed a 17-year-old girl who was on the tracks in Massapequa on Monday afternoon, according to the Massapequa Post, which cited Nassau County Police and MTA officials.
The girl was not authorized to be on the tracks, according to MTA officials. In service advisories, the railroad described the incident as involving an “unauthorized person on the track.”
The crash happened during the evening commute on the Babylon Branch. According to the Metropolitan Transportation Authority, service in both directions was delayed after the incident. Initial service alerts reported delays of 10 to 20 minutes for several trains through the area.
Among the affected trains were the 3:17 p.m. from Penn Station to Babylon, which ran 15 to 20 minutes behind schedule, and the 3:45 p.m. from Penn Station to Massapequa, delayed 10 to 15 minutes. The 3:43 p.m. from Babylon to Penn Station also ran 15 to 20 minutes late.
As of Monday evening, no additional information about the girl had been released, and the MTA had not reported any additional train cancellations related to the incident.
