Hailing from Washington, DC, folk/pop-punk artist Spoonboy is kicking off a summer tour in promotion of 3 split EP’s that he is digitally releasing today! Go get em! On Saturday he will be playing with and The Goodbye Party (of ), both bands on splits with him. Today, in Manhattan he will also be playing an acoustic show at with , Shark Shark (members of Defiance Ohio and Nana Grizol) and. Definitely go to at least one of these shows so you don’t miss out on Spoonboy’s poignant lyrics and catchy hooks!
Remember when the Girls took to Bushwick to rage out in a warehouse and (accidentally) smoke crack? Well, that’s not the route we recommend you go this weeken–maybe instead grab a 5-hour energy to get your fix as you hop around art shows by day and hit the rock and roll by night! Not all these shows are tied in with Bushwick Open Studios, but they will all be mega-fun and nothing like the gif above (hopefully?). #12 O Paradiso, A/D, Pass Kontrol, KDH @ Radio Bushwick (SAT 8PM, $8)
O Paradiso is a perfect match for Bushwick Open Studios as their live performances and their music itself contains a lot of performance art and intricately woven details into their instrumentals. Pass Kontrol will also be playing with their punk/new-wave stylings.
#11 Old table, Bluffing, Lobby Art, Big Neck @ Goodbye Blue Monday (FRI 9PM, FREE)
Goodbye Blue Monday is still alive (for now?) and hosting this fun, free, Friday night show at the beginning of Open Studios.We recommend catching Bluffing with their grunge-y distortion, catch-y riffs and sultry vocals.
#10 Challenger, Art Decade, Silver Bird, Brian Merrill @ Union Hall (FRI 8:3oPM, $8)
It’s Challenger’s record release show! Celebrate with them as they play tunes from their new record with upbeat synths and a less depressing Casiotones for the Painfully Alone feel. Also with a release is Silver Bird, so maaaybe treck it to Park slope to check them out with their soulful, indie-Americana sounds.
#9 Rubulad: Mysteries of the Deep @ The Paper Box (SAT 9PM, $10 before 10PM, $20 after!)
So many things happening at The Paper Box on Saturday. First of all, there will be live music by Les Sans Culottes, Friend Roulette, and a secret guest. Secondly, a cabaret. Third, a film fest in the yard. There will also be visuals, art, snacks and SURPRISE SEA Chanteys (what?!?!) DO it, just go.
#8 Popgun Presents: Young Heel, Zula, Silent Rider @ Glasslands (FRI 8PM, $10)
Young Heel, three men in white t-shirts and stache-y facial hair, are releasing their experimental, glitch-pop EP this Friday! Also playing are Zula and Silent Rider, Definitely for those who love to dance with their eyes closed while sipping on a negro modelo.
#7 JAVELIN, SLAVIC SOUL PARTY, LOS HACHEROS @ Ten Eyck Playground (SAT 2-7 PM, FREE)
This awesome free party will include live mural painting, lots of playtime for kids, and a play sesh for adults, too! One of our fave bk bands, Javelin, will be performing, alongside Balkan Brass & funk band Slavic Soul Party! The event is free and open to all to try to raise awareness of the need for repairs and upkeep of Ten Eyck Park and Playground.
#6 The Lemons, Hippy, Street Gnar, Flower Girl, Milk Dick, Tall Juan, Viking @ 94 Evergreen (FRI 7PM, $)
Chicago’s The Lemons will be playing as well as Street Gnar from Lexington, Kentucky! In addition there will be a bunch of exciting and super hip Brooklyn bands that sport descriptors in their names. It will be a backyard show with the likelihood of potential S’mores. It may not be part of Bushwick Open Studios officially but it’s definitely a great way to kick off the weekend.
#5 NO BS BOS Launch Party @ Brush Studios (FRI 6pm, FREE)
If you need to pick up our sexy BOS guide, there’s no better place than our new home office at Brooklyn Brush Studios at 203 Harrison street! Free booze for all, DJs to keeping you dancing, goodie bags, an art auction, and so many printed guides!
#4 Slideluck Bushwick III @ Sandbox Studios (SAT 7PM, FREE)
Oh man! Sandbox Studios will be celebrating BOS with an Instagram Scavenger Hunt they have put together with US, Bushwick Daily! They will also have a slideshow at 9pm post food and drinks featuring 10 artists from Bushwick and 10 artists from B’more, each artist paired with music by local musicians! Bring some food, as it is a “slide LUCK,” get tipsy, and enjoy this sweet multimedia experience. Follow it up by RSVP’ing to 1 Knickerbocker’s after party so you can get in for free! AWESOME!
#3 Christo Buffam Tribute Show @ Silent Barn (SAT 3PM, Donation-based)
The community is still saddened by the passing of Christo Buffam and to celebrate his life verses mourning his death, his fellow musicians have chosen to put together a show with music by people who loved him, played music with him, or whom he constantly supported. There will be a display in the gallery if his silkscreen art and it will be a positive and welcome place to come if you knew Christo Buffam or if you love these great bands including The Vandelles, A Place to Bury Strangers, The Teen Age, and Gunfight!
