Starrlight Bakery is expanding its hours to serve fresh sourdough bread throughout the day, marking a shift from its previous evening pizza focus to all-day accessibility for Bushwick residents.

The solar-powered bakery at 95 Starr Street will launch its new bread window this month, operating from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. Monday through Friday until sold out. The expanded schedule offers loaves, baguettes, focaccia, and pastries alongside a streamlined pizza service running Tuesday through Sunday from 5 p.m. to 10 p.m. (until 11 p.m. on weekends).

“We originally delivered most of our loaves to food pantries across the five boroughs,” said Emanuel, founder of Starrlight Bakery. “When funding collapsed in 2025, we shifted our focus to serving the local community. Now neighbors can pick up fresh bread throughout the day, while we continue supporting food security by delivering unsold loaves to community fridges.”

The bakery operates with a real-time ordering system that allows customers to see live inventory updates and schedule pickup times while items are still warm from the oven. This technology-forward approach complements the traditional sourdough techniques used in production.

Solar-powered bakeries remain rare in New York City, making Starrlight one of the few operations combining renewable energy with artisanal bread production. The sustainable approach aligns with the bakery’s community-focused mission of providing accessible fresh bread while minimizing environmental impact.

Starrlight has grown significantly since Emanuel began selling loaves at farmers markets in July 2021. The transition from market vendor to brick-and-mortar neighborhood staple reflects the increasing demand for locally-produced, naturally leavened breads in Bushwick.

The bakery’s commitment to food security continues through its practice of donating unsold inventory to community fridges, ensuring that fresh bread reaches residents who might not otherwise have access to artisanal baked goods.

The new expanded schedule will roll out later this month, with bread service beginning at 10 a.m. and continuing until evening or until daily inventory sells out.
