A New Building in Bushwick Will Dominate a Defunct Crown Fried Chicken

A new, weird-looking building is set to spring up on a Bushwick corner.

A rendering for 1595 Broadway shows a seven-story building towering above a now-closed Crown Fried Chicken on the corner of Broadway and Halsey Street in Bushwick, Brownstoner first reported. But unless the new building gobbles up the fast food spot, the structure’s blank and lofty walls will command the strange scene for some time.

Developer Bawbeh bought the property on the Bushwick and Bed-Stuy border in May 2017 for the very low price of $500,000, Brownstoner reported; yet the outdoor spaces and balconies shown in the rendering suggest that the 32 units in the buildings will fetch market rates, despite the rattling train tracks and low-income buildings located nearby.

Workers have started digging the foundation of the mixed-use building, and the vibration from the construction has already caused two complaints in late March, according to Brownstoner.

This news comes as many more buildings and businesses catering to a higher-income bracket are popping up along Broadway. In March we reported on the opening of a Starbucks in the Fat Albert building, which is further down Broadway, and the on-going battle that housing activists are waging against the controversial development of the Pfizer site in the Broadway Triangle.
