On Saturday, a video of four police officers arresting a spanish speaking churro-vendor went viral.
Today, Bushwick Daily received photos of another churro vendor in handcuffs, this time at the Myrtle Wyckoff station.
This new photo was taken minutes before state and local officials gathered at Broadway Junction to speak out against over-policing in the Subway system.
Witness to the arrest, Rafael Antonio Martinez, who told Bushwick Daily, “It was 11:40 a.m.. From what I can gather she was very confused as to why we she was being arrested. I was on my way to a meeting so I couldn’t stay long to see what happened. But I have seen her on that train stop for years. Never bothers anybody, just sells her stuff. I was actually surprised they even told her something. Cops are routinely around that station but no one’s ever done anything as far as I have seen until today.”
Carina Kaufman-Gutierrez, Deputy Director of the Street Vendor Project told Bushwick Daily that the second Vendor’s name is Maria and she was arrested by officers from Transit District 33. The same District officers that made the first arrest which went viral over the weekend. At time of writing, Maria was being held in booking in the downtown courthouse.
