When you step into The Johnsons on Troutman Street, it’s clear that the bar doesn’t exactly scream “brunch.” This is why it was quite a surprise when Strange Flavor, the burger shack business inside The Johnsons, which opened last summer, announced it will be launching a weekend brunch menu starting next Saturday, February 18.
In this unexpected twist, owners Matt Klein and Bill McGovern will be serving up some unique and delicious dishes for good people of Bushwick who are seeking a casual brunch on the cheap.
Strange Flavors is keeping brunch prices down by sticking to its no-frills business model: for service, expect to order at the window and take a number back to your seat.
The menu stays true to its Sichuan concept with original menu items with an Asian flare. Expect to see inventive dishes like the Mr. Musubi egg sandwich, with soy glazed spam, spicy mayo, scallion, and nori ($8.50) or the vegan thai tea pancakes ($12).
There will also be accompanying brunch cocktails, including a classic Bloody Mary and mimosa ($6), The Johnson’s famed Painkiller ($4), and the “Strange Flavor Whiskey Bloody Back” ($8), a unique spin on a pickleback.
For those of us who like this bar exactly how it is and don’t want it to change, do not fret. It will stay what it’s always been—only now it has breakfast food, so you don’t feel as bad about going back to the bar at noon on a Saturday to nurse your hangover.
Brunch will run from 12 p.m. to 4 p.m. every Saturday and Sunday, after which they will resume their regular menu. Be sure to stop by during opening weekend; you can score a complimentary brunch cocktail with your meal!
In the meantime, you can always get the winning happy hour combo of a burger, beer, and shot for just $12 every day of the week from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m.
